– Patanjali Yog Sutra (Chapter 1, Sutra 30)

In the Patanjali Yog Sutras, Chapter 1, Sutra 30 describes the obstacles on the path of Yoga. The very first obstacle mentioned is Vyadhi, which means disease.

This shows that even in ancient times, Patanjali recognized how human life is affected by disease—and that in the future, such challenges may become even more prevalent.

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Gheranda Samhita also discuss disease, but from a therapeutic perspective, emphasizing practices that restore health.

Similarly, the Bhagavad Gita stands as a great example of how to maintain mental and psychological well-being through clarity of purpose, equanimity, and self-knowledge.

In today’s world, Yoga serves as a means to attain holistic health—physical, mental, psychological, social, and spiritual.

Yoga has always been, and continues to be, Yog Chikitsa—a therapeutic path for human well-being.

“Wellness without being well is a mess.”

Wellness is very important in human life, without being well it is very hard for humans to truly grow.

Yoga has always, throughout history, supported human to be in the state of “well being”. It helps us rise above human suffering and become well in all aspects of life.

What is Yoga?

The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root “Yuj,” which means “Union.”

When we speak of union, we recognize that everything around us is built on connection—when two or more things come together, that is union. In this sense, Yoga is everywhere, because everything is interconnected.

But when we talk specifically about Yoga, especially in relation to the human body, we understand that the human form itself is a beautiful union of various elements.

According to Yogic philosophy, the human body is made up of the five elements (Pancha Mahabhutas):
Earth (Prithvi), Water (Jala), Fire (Agni), Air (Vayu), and Space (Akasha).
When these five elements come together in harmony, the body exists in a state of balance.

Similarly, our cells, tissues, organs, and systems are all functioning in unity. This inner union is also Yoga.
But often, imbalances occur—whether in body, breath, or mind—and this is where Yoga practice becomes essential.

By following the path of Ashtanga Yoga (the eight limbs of yoga), we can bring the body and mind back into a state of balance and harmony.

This process of restoring balance is what we call Yoga ChikitsaYoga Therapy.

It is the healing aspect of Yoga that addresses physical, mental, and emotional imbalances through traditional yogic practices.

Yoga Chikitsa is not limited to just āsana. It includes a complete approach:
PrāṇāyāmaDhyāna (meditation)YamasNiyamas, and other elements of the yogic path.

While modern therapeutic approaches can be integrated, Yoga Chikitsa remains rooted in traditional knowledge.

It’s important to understand that Yoga Therapy has its limitations—some conditions can be managed, while others may not be fully curable.

Still, it offers a powerful path toward managing illness, improving well-being, and living in deeper alignment with our true nature.
